Nearby, the medieval Castle of Arouce recalls the defensive line that protected the southern approaches to Coimbra during the formation of Portugal.

Continue to Coimbra for free time to lunch.

After lunch:

Coimbra – Royal Heritage & Academic Splendour
Discover one of Portugal’s most captivating historic cities. Begin at the University’s Paço das Escolas, admiring its monumental courtyard and sweeping views over the Mondego River. Visit the magnificent Joanina Library, a dazzling celebration of Baroque artistry and Portugal’s academic heritage.

Continue to the Old Cathedral — Sé Velha, an outstanding Romanesque monument whose fortress-like appearance evokes medieval Coimbra. Descend the atmospheric Quebra-Costas, following the narrow lanes and steps through the Arco de Almedina, once a gateway into the walled city.

Explore lively Rua Ferreira Borges, the traditional shops and cafés of the lower town, and Praça do Comércio, framed by the Romanesque Church of São Tiago. Continue along Rua Visconde da Luz to Santa Cruz Church, resting place of Portugal’s first two kings, Afonso Henriques and Sancho I. Enjoy free time for a final stroll towards Largo da Portagem, overlooking the Mondego.

Onward to Porto
After this journey through Portugal’s landscapes, royal history and university traditions, join the A1 motorway north towards Porto, arriving at the end of the day.

Planning note: allow an early departure and keep the first three stops brief to leave sufficient time for Coimbra. The Joanina Library requires a timed-entry ticket booked ahead; its reserved time should determine the day’s schedule.
