LISBON IN ALL ITS SPLENDOUR –Historic neighbourhoods, royal treasures and spectacular riverside views — a full day of discovery
Discover the many faces of Lisbon on a captivating journey combining panoramic sightseeing by coach with guided walks through the city’s most atmospheric quarters. From elegant avenues and lively squares to Alfama’s timeless streets, magnificent royal interiors and the monuments of Belém, experience a city shaped by centuries of history and an enduring connection to the sea.
Our tour begins at Marquês de Pombal Square, before descending the elegant Avenida da Liberdade, a grand, tree-lined boulevard framed by distinguished buildings, luxury boutiques and traditional mosaic pavements. Arriving at Restauradores Square, leave the coach and join your guide for a walking tour through the vibrant heart of Lisbon.
Discover Rossio Square, where flowing patterns of black-and-white Portuguese cobblestones create the striking impression of waves beneath your feet. Continue into the Pombaline downtown, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 and still one of Lisbon’s favourite districts for shopping and strolling. Follow the lively pedestrian Rua Augusta, lined with shops and cafés, towards its monumental triumphal arch. Beyond awaits Praça do Comércio, a magnificent riverside square occupying the site of the former royal palace, where Lisbon opens majestically onto the Tagus.
Next, discover the unmistakable charm of Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest and most evocative neighbourhoods. Your guide leads you through a captivating maze of winding lanes, stone stairways and intimate squares, where tiled façades, wrought-iron balconies and laundry fluttering overhead reveal the rhythms of everyday Lisbon. Closely associated with the soulful traditions of Fado, this historic quarter offers an unforgettable encounter with the city’s character. Along the walk, pass the imposing Lisbon Cathedral and Saint Anthony’s Church, traditionally associated with the birthplace of Lisbon’s beloved saint, known internationally as Saint Anthony of Padua.
Rejoin your coach and cross the Tagus to the Christ the King monument, rising above the southern bank. From its elevated setting, admire a sweeping panorama of Lisbon, the river and the spectacular 25 de Abril Bridge — a memorable opportunity to appreciate the city’s extraordinary landscape.
Returning to Lisbon, continue towards Belém, the monumental district closely linked to Portugal’s great maritime voyages. Along the way, pass Belém Palace, the official residence of the President of Portugal, before enjoying free time for lunch.
In the afternoon, step into the splendour of Ajuda National Palace — entrance included. Once home to King Luís I and Queen Maria Pia, this magnificent royal residence brings the world of the Portuguese court vividly to life. Discover richly furnished rooms, sumptuous decorative details and grand ceremonial interiors that evoke the elegance of nineteenth-century royal life.
Continue to the celebrated Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and an enduring expression of the wealth and ambition of Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Enjoy a guided visit inside the monastery church, whose soaring columns and intricate stonework create an extraordinary setting. Discover its associations with King Manuel I, whose reign gave the Manueline style its name, and with the navigator Vasco da Gama, whose tomb commemorates his place in Portugal’s maritime history.
Afterwards, walk towards the waterfront to admire the Monument to the Discoveries, its dramatic silhouette honouring the figures associated with Portuguese maritime exploration. Enjoy time for photographs, refreshments and a comfort stop nearby, while taking in the broad waters of the Tagus and the beauty of Belém’s riverside setting.
The return journey takes you through Restelo, an elegant residential district known for its distinguished villas and embassies, and through the green surroundings of Monsanto Forest Park, Lisbon’s vast wooded retreat.
A memorable day bringing together Lisbon’s authentic neighbourhoods, royal grandeur, maritime heritage and unforgettable views.
